Building India’s Pet Industry on Trust, Quality and Standards

TPCI convened the 1st edition of PetConclave 2026 in Hyderabad on 7 October, bringing together leaders from India’s pet-care ecosystem. The day focused on the evolving pet parent, quality, standards and policy support for the industry’s next phase of growth.

The Trade Promotion Council of India (TPCI) hosted the 1st edition of PetConclave 2026 in Hyderabad on 7 October 2026, a full day of dialogue, insight and business engagement for India’s pet-care ecosystem. The conclave focused on three interconnected priorities: understanding the rapidly evolving Indian pet market, building trust through quality and standards, and translating the industry’s growing opportunity into meaningful action.

Mr Nitin Jain, COO, Godrej Pet Care and Chair of the National Committee on Pet Industry by TPCI, said the category is approaching a significant inflection point. He emphasised that the opportunity lies in building the market thoughtfully, through a deeper understanding of pet parents, greater investment across the value chain and an enabling policy environment.

Mr Manish Syag, Managing Director, Mars Petcare India and National Industry Mentor of the Committee, highlighted the opportunity to advance Make in India by building domestic capabilities in manufacturing, research, ingredients, testing and innovation. He called for science-based standards, consistent quality and greater awareness of complete and balanced nutrition, and for collaboration among industry, government and experts.

In his message for the conclave, Mr Pradeep Sharma, Deputy Director (Food & Agriculture Department), Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), shared that BIS has taken up the revision of IS 11968:2019, the Specification for Pet Food for Dogs and Cats, as a priority. The revised standard covers pet food categories, nutritional parameters, ingredients, microbiological safety and methods for determining metabolizable energy. A dedicated BIS working group, with industry and domain experts including veterinary institutions, is developing it. BIS will hold an awareness programme on 2 November 2026 at BIS Headquarters for manufacturers, startups, veterinarians, retailers and other stakeholders.

thePack.in presented its report, The Realities of Dog Parenting in India. It found that average monthly spending on dogs ranges from ₹5,707 among households earning below ₹50,000 a month to ₹7,431 among those earning above ₹2.5 lakh. Expert recommendations and brand reputation emerged as key purchase drivers alongside price. While 97.3% of surveyed dog parents had consulted a veterinarian, 53.1% still had significant concerns about their dog’s health.

The discussions showed that India’s pet opportunity goes beyond premiumisation. TPCI formally launched the National Committee on Pet Industry last month, with representatives from Mars India Pet Nutrition, Godrej Pet Care, Snuggles, Reliance Pet Care, Innomalous and Zigly, among others. TPCI will continue to convene industry, government and experts through the Committee to build a globally credible and responsible pet-care industry.
