India largest producer & exporter of Turmeric in the world: TPCI

– Exports recorded at US$ 236 million in 2018, North America is the largest regional market
– Accounts for 80% of global production

New Delhi, 26th June 2019: Trade Promotion Council of India (TPCI), today said, India is the world’s largest producer and exporter of turmeric with exports recorded at US$ 236 million in 2018. Speaking on the record export, Mohit Singla, Chairman (TPCI) said, “We are the global leaders in Turmeric and North America is the largest regional market for the product, while Europe is the fastest growing market.” The other countries which competes India in Turmeric exports are Myanmar (170 million US$), Indonesia and Netherland, he added.

Further Singla said, “India is the largest manufacturer, consumer and exporter of curcumin, contributing to more than 80% of the global production. Turmeric ranks third in the total exports of spices from India. The major importing countries of Indian turmeric are the UAE, Iran, US, Sri Lanka, Japan, UK, Malaysia and South Africa.”

Commenting on the advantage Singla said,The mounting demand of curcumin, a substance found in turmeric, in the pharmaceutical for treating critical ailments like cancer, food and cosmetic industries is a major factor driving the growth of the global curcumin market. This rise in demand of curcumin is largely due to the growing awareness among consumers regarding its anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Apart from this, the surging inclination of consumers towards organic products is also likely to provide an impetus to the market in coming years.”

Chairman TPCI has strongly recommended that, “The positioning of Turmeric as anti-cancer pharma brand can take the exports of Turmeric from currently US$ 236 million to a quantum jump. Also, if the drug is patented globally it will give an extra edge to the pharma competitiveness of India.”
