Panel discussion on India-EU Trade Agreement

TPCI is organising a panel discussion on Indo-EU Trade Negotiations – A new era of collaboration on May 28, 2021. The session will be conducted with prominent experts in the domain of international trade and India-EU relations.

The panelists will be talk about the larger geopolitical and trade context of India-EU relations, future potential of partnership and trade opportunities, major roadblocks impeding the culmination of the trade agreement, and what quick gains the two sides can expect with the resumption of negotiations.

Background of topic

The India-EU summit held on May 8, 2021 heralded a path-breaking decision by both sides to resume negotiations for balanced and comprehensive free trade and investment agreements. Negotiations on both the Trade and Investment Agreements will be pursued on parallel parallelly to achieve early conclusion of both agreements together. India and the EU also announced dedicated dialogues on WTO issues, regulatory cooperation, market access issues and supply chain resilience, demonstrating the desire to deepen and further diversify economic engagement.

The EU was India’s third-largest trading partner and second-largest destination for Indian exports as of 2020. Trade in goods has increased by 72%, and the EU’s share in foreign investment inflows to India has more than doubled from 8% to 18% over the same period. Clearly, experts point out to significant potential and complementarities in the relationship that both sides can explore further.
